Some disabled persons can’t walk, speak or do some of the most basic tasks to care for themselves. Several disorders cause this including cerebral palsy, autism (not to be confused with mental retardation, which sacrifices intelligence in favor of motor skills) and/or other damage of the nervous system due to toxins (Hg, Pb and/or others), medications, modern medicine and/or other agents.

Some of these individuals need to be fed, cleaned, showered, wiped clean after defecating or urinating (toilet, diaper or other medium) and/or helped with the most basic tasks to care for themselves. Some grow old with the faculties of little children or, in some cases, not much more than that of babies — never able to fend for themselves. Surprisingly (and stupidly) enough, caretakers (especially parents) need to apply for legal guardianship of their own adult children. These are the human pets.

sounds weird to me that parents have to apply for the right to take care of their disabled children!

  A person 18 or older is an adult with all legal responsibilities, duties and rights whether or not that person can support and/or care for him/herself. So if a person’s legally disabled and needs supervision (care), a parent needs to file for guardianship or risk losing the child (having the person committed to a hospital or community home). The legal system sucks especially in the state of New York.
