Lent: superstitions

Growing up, I heard many superstitions and strange rules regarding Lent.

  1. As a form of penance, we’re asked not to eat (red) meat. The idea goes beyond what foods not to put in our stomachs. It actually refers to flesh — sex. Hence we’re not supposed to have sexual activities (masturbation, intercourse, etc). Then again not eating meats does help to purge toxins.
  2. Related to the latter, conceiving a child during the month of March (Lent) is a form of condemnation. The product (child) would most likely be hell-bound, some sort of monster and/or demon.
  3. Again related to the first one, eating red meats on a Friday would make the person grow a fish tail — once again the idea and fear of becoming a monster or demon.

On a personal note, I’m a vegetarian.
