publishing a book: trashing the first version

Under The Thelián Sky: Beyond the Great Unknown (updated cover)I’ve been shopping for publishers as of late considering the idea of putting all three books in one volume.

I’m neither satisfied nor unpleased with WestBow Press (current publisher of Under the Thelián Sky: Beyond the Great Unknown, ISBN 9781449735920, subsidiary of Thomas Nelson), but I’m considering my options. As such, I’ve considered promoting it through Booksneeze (another subsidiary of Thomas Nelson), which would cost me $1,500 and I can’t afford right now.

One publisher and promoter told me that releasing a 900-page (161,549 words) book (paper) would retail for about $33, while the ebook (electronic) would be about $10 ($23 bloody difference). That’s too expensive for a new (unknown) author. I’d consider no more than $7 for the paper version and $4 for the electronic as acceptable retail prices.

Another told me that I’d need to dish out about $2,000 for reviews (advertisement). Promotion without a doubt is the highest cost of putting a book in the hands of readers and/or potential buyers. As such, advertisement costs are hardly ever included in a self-publishing package.

Another possibility would be becoming a publisher (LLC and all the legal shenanigans) and using a third-party to distribute it and sell it.

For the time being, I want to submit a revised version of my first book to a contest, but I’d first have to edit out at least 5,564 words (manuscript of no more than 50,000 words). The contest winners (one per genre) get a publishing deal, worldwide distribution and a healthy cash prize (advance payment from royalties). In other words, the publisher would be putting its trust in each winner, as well as covering sales and promotion.

About time someone stood up to the Obama so-called health reforms that support death and sickness.

Judge Allows NY Archdiocese Lawsuit Over Obamacare
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York can proceed with a lawsuit challenging a requirement that employee health care plans cover contraceptives, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.
The lawsuit is one of several brought by dozens of Catholic institutions against the contraceptive provisions of President Barack Obama’s new health care law, known as Obamacare.”
