why I use the Authorized King James Version (KJV) but not others?

The Authorized King James Version or simply referred to as the King James Version (KJV) is one of the oldest English translations, from which many newer versions are derived. I try to avoid the willing and unwilling layers of misconceptions, wrong misinterpretations, confusions, bias and other corrupting agents.

Perhaps an older version that could be used in the 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV) translation, but Old English could be tricky to understand nowadays.

“1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to rest in green pasture, and leadeth me by the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul, and leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I should walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. 5 Thou dost prepare a table before me in the sight of mine adversaries: thou dost anoint mine head with oil, and my cup runneth over. 6 Doubtless kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall remain a long season in the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 23 GNV)

“1 In the beginning was that Word, and that Word was with God, and that Word was God. 2 This same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by it, and without it was made nothing that was made. 4 In it was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 And that light shineth in the wilderness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This same came for a witness, to bear witness of that light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that light. 9 This was that true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him: and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them he gave prerogative to be the sons of God, even to them that believe in his Name, 13 Which are born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And that Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we saw the glory thereof, as the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father) full of grace and truth.”
(John 1:1-14 GNV)

Besides Middle English sounds very cool. It also sounds very authoritative. After all, it commissioned by King James VI and I (1566–1625) of Scots, England and Ireland in 1607. KJV was finished and published in 1611. In all, it’s matter of personal preference. From a legal perspective, KJV is Public Domain and not subject to licensing and royalties.

“1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” (Psalm 23 KJV)

“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-14 KJV)

Now I must admit how modern newer translations sound like NRSV, which we use at church. Note the legal statements that the publisher requests to be included.

“1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his names sake.
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.”

“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1-14 NRSV)

I’ve tried reading the Bible in other languages, but it simply doesn’t have the same effect in me. Some ideas and/or messages feel different in Spanish.

(Juan 1:1-14 RVR1960)

French isn’t any help.

Italian — my so-called mother-language — means nothing as I never learned the language.

German’s one of those languages that I promised myself I’d learn over a decade ago.

(Johannes 1:1-14 LUTH1545)

As a geek, Esperanto should do the trick, but I failed to learn it.

(Sankta Johano 1:1-14 Londano)
